I just spend a week figuring out and diagnosing problems with a 12" powerbook g4 someone gave me. The DC-in board was shot and not wanting to buy a new one i soldered on jumper wires and made a new plug. This of course involved taking the computer apart about a dozen times. (Might be related to sound problem?)

Now it boots! first thing I did was to install Mint PPC. Seamed like a great distro and i am familial with Debian. When i reboot, instead of a chime, i get a horrible sound. not a quite a tone, like constant static. Then it stops while the kernel loads, then once i am in GDM it starts again and keeps going, forever.

I tried muting it via keyboard shortcut keys, alsamixer, and from the taskbar. Nothing. If i keep using it like this my ears will bleed.

anybody else have this problem and or know how to fix it?

Well, I wasn't able to find anything on the internet, In the end, I unplugged the speakers from the logic board.

I have no sound, but my ears are not bleeding!

For what it is worth, when i plug in headphones, sound works great!
