Hello everyone,

I have a Powermac G4, graphite. I've had nothing but problems with several attempts at other GNU/Linux installs. Performing updates from Ubuntu 10.04 (which was the only one that would actually work) crashed everything. Tried debian, which worked, but I wanted something a bit more user friendly.

I installed MintPPC (I saw several posts on the ubuntu forums from linuxopjemac which directed me here) and I'm having some issues with the display. I read the instructions on editing the xorg.conf file, but I didn't see my hardware listed and was nervous about wrecking yet another install.

I'm also getting a weird issue where anytime I open a program, the program window flashes on and offscreen, and renders the system unusable.

Advice?

The quicksilvers went from 700mhz to over 1ghz, but it looks like they only used a geforce 4 mx and a radeon 128.

Tried to run Terminal. Once the terminal window came up, it kept flashing and moving the window down and eventually off the screen. Attempting to run these commands in single user mode (typing in Linux 1 at the yaboot menu).

Okay, I'm at another stopping point. I'm trying to load the necessary xorg.conf file from Single User mode, since I cannot work with the gui without it crashing.

Problem is, I'm a bit weak with terminal. I don't know how either a) boot into the OS in terminal with networking, or b) start the networking services in the command line of Single User mode.

I'm getting the hunch that Single User mode doesn't support network devices, but it's more likely that I'm a dunce.

in single user mode you should have internet working...

boot with

give root password and do as I told

then CTRL-D to resume booting
