Success!

I was able to perform an apt-get update. Now I will try the xorg.conf stuff from before. Will update in a moment.

don't forget to make /etc/network/interfaces as before again, otherwise network-manager in LXDE will not be able to set eth0...

Looks like that xorg.conf file did the trick. The system is up and running, and is very snappy! Now it's time to install plugins, browsers, and other necessities. Is there a quick and easy resource for how to load flash and other plugins?

Thanks again for your effort on this (and mintPPC itself!) If anyone else has a g4 quicksilver, this info will be absolutely necessary!

is there a way to reset it? I put it back to the way it was, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Is a reboot necessary?

After the reboot, the system was able to control the eth0 interface again. :D

This is an interesting thread for me as I have been running MintPPC 9.3 on my PM G4 Quicksilver since it first came out. Because of problems with the stock AGP 4x Nvidia GeForce2 MX card, my initial reaction to the problem you found was to swap it out for an ATI Radeon 7500 card instead of the solution suggested by linuxopjemac. I didn't have any problem with that card at all in MintPPC 9.2. With the advent of 9.3, however, I started seeing an annoying greenish glow to text in some windows, Terminal, in particular.

I swapped the card again, this time for a Radeon 9000, like what is used on later PM G4s. Everything seemed to work fine until I went to Logout where there was a black block behind the various option boxes and part of the header. I put the Radeon 7500 back in again.

This may all have to do with my old Viewsonic monitor and its 1280x1024 screen resolution. It has a broken DVI port and I am forced to connect with a VGA cable, even on the Radeon 9000 through an adapter.

tcarlson, I would like to experiment some stuff with you and your nVidia card. Tell me when you have some time, then we try to get that card running with nouveau. I am curious as I learned some new stuff via the debian-powerpc mailing list.

I'm retired, so whenever is good for you is fine. I am 7 hours behind you in the US Mountain Time Zone.

ok great. I will first have a look myself at the issue. I now have a G4 with a Radeon 9000 Pro card in it. I also have a GeForce 7600 card lying somewhere. Maybe i get that card working with nouveau. If so, I will tell you how to do it. If not, we will try to troubleshoot that card of yours. I do think however that VGA is the culprit of your problem with the colors. If you were to use DVI you'd have a better chance of having full support of the Radeon card.

That black box you describe I had also with the VGA cable attached to my Radeon 9000 Pro. I have it working fine with the DVI output now.
