Based on another post that I made when I was somehow inadvertently logged into LXDE and that caused function meltdown issues, you mentioned that the GNOME desktop was an option; so last night I logged into a plain "GNOME" session to test it out. And, it seems like it gives me a more "Mac-like" desktop . . . somehow having the toolbar and stuff at the top of the page feels more comfortable. And, my preferences for having "computer, home, and trash" icons on the desktop that I made in Mint-LXDE were there in GNOME, but not in the Mint-LXDE session. And the icon/buttons for "window selector," and "move pages to get to desktop" in the corners seem to give more functionality . . . I'm thinking I'll play with the GNOME for awhile. I also like the spaceship desktop image . . . very funny.

But, question, in the GDM login window there were a couple options for other GNOMEs . . . like GNOME/openbox?? and one other GNOME to choose from?? Do any or all of them work or any better than the other? Or is it just the plain "GNOME" that is the choice? I'm asking because the issues with the plain LXDE sessions didnt show up until after I had set up preferences and other things . . . and then it just started to not function. Which GNOME is the best GNOME to log into?

e.e.p.

While we are discussing gnome desktops. What is the difference between "LXDE" and "Linux Mint LXDE".

EDIT- Well I just noticed one major difference. Plain LXDE sits around 70MB of RAM and no swap whereas Linux Mint LXDE sits at around 90-100MB w/ a pinch in swap. Granted, my swappiness is at 10 rather than the default 60.

EDIT 2- Gnome weighs in at 106MB and 5 in Swap, though a lot more similar to the Ubuntu I usually use.

EDIT 3- Gah, you got me thinking, darn you! Making an organized list now:

Gnome | 106 | 5
LXDE | 70 | 0
Mint LXDE | 95 | 1<
Gnome/Openbox | 107 | 17
Openbox-KDE -Crashes
Openbox -Never fully opens
TWM | 41 | 1< ...but takes some serious getting used to.

@theos911:

It's my pleasure to disturb your peaceful mind with "the GNOME question." According to JD. the default desktop is "mint-linux LXDE" which is his modification of plain LXDE for mintPPC . . . it seems that the plain LXDE isn't set up to run in mintppc, but he said that he "backported" or included the GNOME desktop to be able to be used in mintppc, but then didn't exactly specify which one out of the 7 or 8 choices in the GDM login window that would work. He didn't mention KDE at all or the other ones, so perhaps the libraries or whatever needed for them are not included in the update manager, perhaps thru Synaptic it might be possible to get KDE going??? But, right now, GNOME is looking more familiar to me . . . just wondering if there is one better than the other two?

e.e.p.

Well, it appears that regular old LXDE uses a good bit less resources than its minty counterpart. However, now that I'm used to tvm, I'll be using it.

Still wondering which of the GNOMEs has been fully empowered in MintPPC and would be the best GNOME . . . . Is one GNOME better than the other two GNOMEs as far as function goes?

eep: I don't know, sorry. Just try them out I'd say. I only worked with LXDE.

Ah, well I recalled that the LXDE is what you have "massaged" for mintppc, but I thought you said that you did stuff to enable GNOME to work as well??? Sure, it's no big deal to log into another session; what's keeping me from doing that is that somehow I got logged into the plain LXDE sessions and everything seemed to be working, I was doing system updates, setting up preferences and then a couple weeks later it just started messing up beginning with the drop down menu boxes being empty and windows not drag-able . . . . So, I wanted to avoid using a GNOME that wasn't compatible with Mint, or something like understanding that "mint-LXDE" is OK, but LXDE really isn't; but it's still on the list and it's use-able until it doesn't work, etc . . . .

e.e.p.

It's totally safe to try GNOME.

OK, thanks for the follow up on the safety of GNOME; it looks more Mac-like, but it seems that there are less apps and/or functions in the GNOME versions than you have provided in the mint-LXDE ??? Seems like more stuff is happening in mint-LXDE than is available in the GNOME??

e.e.p.

As I said before, I didn't make GNOME work as it works in Linux Mint main version. If things are not working, then that's a fact. I turned my attention at mint-lxde when I made MintPPC 9. Feel free to make the GNOME session work better.
