It looks ok? Well, ok then! First, I'd like to say, Last night I was on the ssh server I set up and I've installed Links, the Command-Line browser, and I am currently running my linux machine as I post this using this interesting CLI browser. Next, With research, I've managed to find out at least that my computer came stock with a ATI Rage Pro 16MB video card. I honestly have no idea if it still has that card, but I'm pretty sure that it does. I currently still get a black screen upon boot and now that you know my monitor, I assume it's the video card's fault for not being able to boot into X. If you can please give me a good xorg.conf for this monitor/graphics card that'd help me alot. We're almost there! Thanks!!!!

Just to be sure, you don't see a mouse pointer on a black screen right ?

Hi guys, I'm dealing with a similar issue on my Mac G5.
I have this model Mac G5:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/p ... p_pci.html

A few things I have tried myself:
Got the g5_1.txt file, moved it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, checked the file to see if it was allright and rebooted.
Got the same issue.
Tried dpkg --configure -a and just to be sure Linux url=mintppc.org
No issues there, but got the same problem blank screen and a blinking light.
Tried to re-install xserver [sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati gdm gdm-themes-mintppc]
Still got no screen (no pointer) and a blinking light after reboot.

In fact the only way I can login is to type Linux 1 nomodeset at boot.
If I leave the nomodeset option out I will get nada, nothing but blank screen and blinking light.
The nomodeset option allows me to see CLI :(

I did get an error tho
Het starten van X-server (grafische omgeving) is mislukt.
Translated in English it's this:
Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
<yes> <no>

When I view the output I see two errors
(EE) [drm] KMS not enabled
(EE) No devices detected

How the hell can it not detect a device? As far as I know everything is pluged in.
And I can see the error, so I know my screen is on-line.

I also get a warning
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist.
Entry deleted from font path
Not a major issue I assume.

I'm lost here :( going through every thinkable step and still left with a blank screen.
Can any of you help me out, I might have missed something.
Many thanks in advance.

I understand now.
KMS got disabled when I used the nomodeset option upon boot.
Why is it so friggin' hard to get something as trivial as a monitor working with Debian based distro's.
I tried Yellow Dog as a test and that sucker worked straight out of the box.
The whole distro sucks if you ask me, but at least they got the driver/display issue solved.
Just getting a working xorg.conf file didn't do the trick for me.
I'm gonna do a fresh install tomorrow and try again.
Cause my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is so messed up right now that I can't see straight anymore :)

hello
has any tried to have fbdev as driver in xorg, conf

it is not optimal, but may be a temporary solution

to obtain a graphic display in order to avoid the CLI
