have a look here:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=88&p=778&hilit=Lucent%2FAgere#p778

basically when you issue
Code:
dmesg | grep airport

you must see something like:

Code:
[ 23.448365] airport 0.00030000:radio: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 8.70
[ 23.459455] airport 0.00030000:radio: firmware: requesting agere_sta_fw.bin
[ 23.628117] airport 0.00030000:radio: Hardware identity 0005:0001:0001:0002
[ 23.634545] airport 0.00030000:radio: Station identity 001f:0002:0009:0030
[ 23.640648] airport 0.00030000:radio: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 9.48

beware that for lot of people airport does not work at the moment. I have no idea why.

I did this earlier last night and the odd thing is mine says the exact same thing as the example you provided. I also see WPA-PSK and WEP is supported. I did take out my wireless card and noted that I have one of the very early 64bit cards. From what I have read there were two released, a 64bit and a 128bit version. Looks like I am out of luck unless you have any more suggestions.

I have no more suggestions. I would opt for a cheap USB stick in your case. Or, in case you own a PowerBook like my Pismoi, a good PCMCIA card.

I was just reading through some of the posts and do you think I need to try and fail back to wicd version 1.6? I didn't try this but wasn't sure if you thought it would help. To remove wicd v1.7 and all components I would just do the following below correct? Then download version 1.6 from the back ports page?

sudo apt-get remove wicd

In the mean time I have orderded a airport extreme compatible pci wireless card for this machine as I prefer to use AES encryption which this old 11b card will not do.

Update: I completely removed Wicd 1.7 and download version 1.6 and all the related 1.6 tools and I still can't connect to any secured network wpa or wep. Hopefully the pci card I have ordered will work because if it doesn't I am going to scrap MintPPC until they get the darn wireless working worth a crap.

I hope for you it will work. I presume you checked its compatibility with Linux in general before buying it...

Success I have a working wireless woot!!!!!!!!!!! I bought one of the airport compatible pci cards off ebay from the US and it works. OSX sees it as an airport extreme and after installing the b43 drivers etc I have it working in mintppc. It works great!!! The posts earlier in this thread were very helpfull. The only stumbling block was I had to add the contrib soruces and install the b43-fwcutter package then reboot and voila it worked.

One more thing about airport classic and WPA. I had the bad password problem also yesterday when booting from my newly created liveDVD. I knew it had to work as the machine runs MintPPC 9 fine on the hard disk. So I tried removing and reloading some modules, this worked.

Code:
sudo rmmod airport
sudo rmmod orinoco
sudo modprobe orinoco
sudo modprobe airport

then refresh the wireless networks and connect.

Hi!

Am a Linux newbie. Am thinking of attempting an install on my old laptop:
PowerBook G4 15"
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
2 GB DDR SDRAM

Will the Mint 9.3 work with the airport wireless without any additional intervention. From this post thread it sounded like this is something that has been worked on but might not be fully resolved?

When I booted from the install CD I burned it was hunting for DHCP network but couldn't seem to find it.

Thanks!
