Hello there,
I have spent a couple of hours on these forums, and I thought I was doing well when my eMac computer set everything up really fast and smooth, until I had a couple of the issues that a few others have had here. My computer specs are here:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/emac/stats/emac_700.htmlIt's 700/512/17 inch/Combo Drive
Everything sets up fine using the 200+ MB file, ethernet connects and downloads even, and I can get into X11, but it's 256 colors I think, and I have the same "window drifting down off the screen" as a few others have reported. I tried looking on the mac.linux.be site for my specific configuration, but I got a couple of the txt files and tried them, and ended up getting a black screen on my mac. If I let the computer sit for a while and go to sleep at the login screen (GUI) I can hit the space bar, and catch a glimpse of the really nice, multi thousand at least, display, and then it blinks back to black an instant later.
I know Wonblows inside and out, and got REALLY tired of it, and someone finally talked me into trying a Mac. I am REALLY ignorant when it comes to Linux, and just recently (within the last 2 years) got rid of all my Winblows PCs and switched to a 24 inch iMac at home, and 21.5 at work, with iDevices (2 iPads) to compliment them. I purchased the eMac for 35 bucks, but I want to toy with Linux, frankly because I think it will run faster on the old hardware, and I want the experience networking it.
I would really appreciate it if someone could talk to me like I'm a 4 year old and point me in the right direction (step by step) to get the file and "mv" it into place so my machine will display more than 256 colors. I succeeded to get myself added to sudoers, and I know how to use nano thanks to this forum. That's the extent of it. It would be really helpful for my learning experience if you could tell me why each step is being taken too, so I understand the process.
Thanks a ton in advance.
