...or even media players for PPC in general. I am about to install MintPPC but hesitate a bit to do start with all the hassle that comes with it. I have struggled a bit with different setups for flash and live streaming on most sites. I must admit that I have so far only downloaded the iso and burned the CD.

I have tried different distros for ppc, not that the alternatives are many. The best one so far has been lubuntu 12.04, but not without its' issues. The most difficult problem has been getting media players to work in browser. In the passed I have been very happy with gnome mplayer and gecko setup as an alternative to Windows Media Player, but it will not stream at all on my iBook G4 (512RAM - 1.42GHz CPU). I am not even sure it is capable of working on PPC, but gnome mplayer plays DVDs and downloads all fine, just not in browser, so probably a gecko issue or browser issue.

Gnash has resisted working too, and does not detect in Firefox at all. The exception has been Midori, where it does stream with sound and all, but a bit jerkily. Moonlight seem to be all out of the question at the moment, it is not kept up for ppc at all anymore either. I'm looking into all possible options. For some sites like Youtube, Firefox Flash Video Replacer has worked at least as a pop out version of stand alone player, embedded in browser not at all on ppc.

My old iBook is still nice to work on, and it would be nice if it could do all the general stuff; video streams, web TV, java for web bank applications (usually works fine with icedtea though), office, an email client...

Does anyone care to talk about their experiences with MintPPC regarding media player in browser? Any thoughts at all really, while I brave up for an install.

No experiences with mediaplayer? I noticed Totem is the chosen media player, which might be good. I suppose there aren't many powerpc users left, and even fewer who are willing to go from osx to linux. I am still planning on installing MintPPC.

I've given up on trying to stream or play videos under any PPC Linux distro. My iBook G3 (500MHz) obviously doesn't have the horsepower. But even my PowerBook G4 (1.25GHz), which still runs OS X 10.4, doesn't stream most videos smoothly. Perhaps it's a browser (configuration) issue?

Well, for what it is worth, I have a 1.07 ghz ibook G4 and I can stream almost any webvideo I want on it, even HD (720p) content using Coreplayer in Mac OS X Tiger. Sadly the makers of Coreplayer have decided to entomb that brilliant altivec enhanced piece of software. You can't download it or buy it any more. Copies bought previously are tied to the mac's serial number, so it can't be moved to any other mac. Its very much a dead piece of software, and protests to the company (mobihand) have been met with the silence of the tomb. One more reason to hate closed source proprietary software.

The only secret is to avoid flash. On Mac OS X If you haven't already, download mactubes or youview for Tiger, Leopard, whatever. That will take care of youtube for you. On MintPPC, flashvideoreplacer, and the greasemonkey script viewtube (in midori) work well for me. In a browser, in a new window, or standalone is not a big deal to me, but viewtube can handle 360p in browser no problem-o. In Midori, go to preferences, and you must enable user add ons, and then download viewtube from userscripts.org. Many other scripts exist to make downloadable other webvideo. Takes some poking around but eventually you'll find solutions to almost everything. As long as you avoid flash. If for some reason you like flash, or are too set in your ways to think about workarounds, well....
