Since no suitable version of Adobe Flash Player is available for MintPPC for playing YouTube videos, a workaround is available which does not use Flash. Instead it loads and plays the video via MPlayer.

> Open IceWeasel
> Menu Bar>Tools>Add-ons
> Extensions>Search: 'FlashVideoReplacer'
> Click 'Install'
> Before playing each YouTube video, you must first change the default choice of 'Embedded' to 'Standalone', after which FlashVideoReplacer will autodetect and then start MPlayer. Give MPlayer a few moments to load the video.

So far, videos have been stable and smooth.

UPDATE: I have just discovered the FlashVideoReplacer icon, upper right of IceWeasel window. Here you can choose, via Preferences, to have it play videos as Standalone by default; to launch the player automatically; to enable/disable other video sites; player preference, etc, etc. I just tested it; it works.

Thanks, you were just a little earlier than me, but I was to post the same thing. It works really neat. I will make this post a sticky.

I found that playing it this way creates a delay. It's better to switch off Iceweasel and replay in mplayer. Or what I do is to use Downloadhelper as a tool and download the videos and play them manually in a shell with mplayer, same result as loading it with flashvideoreplacer and to turn off Iceweasel after that.

Hey, you should check out the latest version of the Ubuntu documentation https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ

There's lots of other ways to watch flash! :D

You can also copy the url function in the flashvideoreplacer or downloadhelper (if an mp4 is available, downloadhelper seems to have to have flash installed which flashvideoreplacer does not), open VLC, open network, paste that url, boom, you are streaming your content. Does this work better than mplayer? I dunno, I find mplayer a little wonky at times. If we could backport Coreplayer we'd be frackin' set. That program is incredible on a G4 or G5, I can stream 720p on an ibook G4 1.2 ghz in Tiger. Ok, I admit, can't do anything else, but still.....

Interesting: I installed lightspark from the repositories (wheezy) but i don't see the plugin in iceweasel. And the main program, does have only a cli (no gui)?

For youtube with FlashVideoReplacer and Mplayer (externally!), i'm pretty fine. Same goes for Vimeo. But anyway, i'd be interested to try out html5. Is that conflicting with FlashVideoReplacer because i don't see that option although i've subscribed to testing hmtl5 with youtube . . . ?

And then: Gnash, at least for me does not really work. Neither as standalone nor as plugin of the browser. Could that be replaced by Lightspark? And if so how?

TIA.

PS. With the new kernel wich comes with wheezy, really many many things work way better than before! :) :)

Hi, everybody,

YouTube HTML5 works on my iMac G5/1.6. Uses 90% of processing power, too much, I think. This is a pure Debian Wheezy installation.

Today I installed MintPPC (11) for the first time on my iMac G3/500. Everything but X went well, this was expected. Trying to watch YouTube HTML5 resulted in a crash, possibly altivec code... anyone with a G3 willing to test?

Then I found Minitube in the menu, and was positively surprised: it works. Uses 90% of processing power here too, but this is fine in this case.

Risto: welcome in the MintPPC forums. Thanks for your contributions in the past with respect to sound in Debian.
