JD & ant2ne:

A few days ago I made a second attempt to install 11 on my iLamp G4 800 MHz with a newly download mini.iso and my experience seems to parallel ant2ne's very closely in terms of the "failed to run preseeded command" error window at the end of it. The installation went a little easier because I figured out how to use the "guided use largest free space" option; fairly quickly into the install I got an error for "missing firmware: agere_sta_fw.bin" with an option to install by USB stick or floppy . . . of which I had neither so I opted to "continue anyway" . . . so I wasn't sure if the "failure to preseed" was due to the missing firmware . . . . Anyway, it said it was installed successfully after perhaps 3 hours, seemed to take longer than on the iBook . . . got the Yaboot window and then it went back into the same "kernel panic" that I got with the first install. Shut the computer down and left town for a couple days.

Today, I read through ant2ne posts again and went through the process of booting again and this time I did the right thing and she booted into 11!!!!!! Got myself added to sudoers list after several tries and ran the updates that update manager recommended for 32 updates and when that was done it said there were some more, so I ran those in Terminal a couple of times and UM says my system is up to date . . . which never seems to happen in my iBook 11 install, new updates every couple of minutes seems like.

So, things are running and I'm typing this post in 11/ilamp unit but the graphics don't seem to be as clean as they are in my iBook, the Mint11 desktop image shows three rough colors for the swirl instead of the one in the iBook. Color transitions seem "pixally" along the borders . . . not unbearable, but not as clean as in the iBook install.

The other issue is that the CPU seems to be maxed out now at 100% with just 3 tabs in Ice Weasel open and the system monitor app open . . . I'll have to find the post from tba about loading Opera again and see if that helps, but, even when I was just opening and closing apps the fan was blowing and the CPU is maxed . . . bit of a pain.

Couple of other issues, when I launched a few apps, like Midori, screen saver, and one other app, they opened but then the desktop toolbar and the computer and home folders started flashing and the Midori window was flashing and slowly dropping down off the desktop . . . kind of a pain . . . same thing happened with "Display settings" app when I was trying to check the screen resolution, which was 1024 X 768 which I think is what it is in OSX, but I couldn't check to see what the other options were before it disappeared below the horizon line . . . had to 2x click on the "computer" desktop icon and open that window which was stable and then I could right click on the toolbar tab to close out the sunken app window . . . it wouldn't open back up when I clicked on the tab, etc.

I'm thinking I need to get the right xorg.conf file for this unit??? But, the other day after the first attempt I tried to register with the Linux.mac.be site to be able to try to find the right file--if that seems like the right conclusion--but the registration process kept hanging at the "CAPTCHA" window . . . it would ask me "what is 5 +1?" and I said "6" . . . and it said that was wrong, then it asked me "what is 4 + 2?" and I said "6" and it said it was wrong, and then it asked me, "what is 3 + 3?" . . . you get the idea, it kept going and no matter what I entered it said I was wrong . . . very depressing . . . . Then the next day the whole PPC forum was unreachable due to "over connections" . . . . Does it seem like these issues relate to the xorg.conf file?? If it does can you walk me through how to get the right file set up . . . or how to get around the CAPTCHA guardian who doesn't seem to know how to answer its own queries???

Anyway, in terms of ant2ne's thread, it seems like similar issues that he is reporting, also, with the "failure to preseed" which seems serious, but then being able to boot into 11; and I'm having the same issue on the iBook with the resuming from sleep when opening the clamshell, it runs some command line stuff appears to be working and then the screen goes black again . . . wifi disconnecting and then have to hit the keyboard or something to get it to resume again . . . that's also happening to my iBook G4.

e.e.p.

You don't need to register at mac.linux.be to find xorg.conf files:
http://mac.linux.be/content/xorgconf-ilamp-g4-1-ghz

I will soon experiment myself with an installation and see what goes wrong with the preseed file.

Thanks kindly for the link . . . so, does it seem like the symptoms I described are due to needing the xorgconf. file? I'm trying to slowly learn the ins & outs of the Linux OS so that my diagnosis skills are improved. It did seem that I couldn't get to the web site without registering, it said something like, "you do not have permission" just like it does here if we try to go from the forum to the Installation instruction page . . . so I just assumed it was the same . . . perhaps I didn't actually try to click on some link in the site to force the issue. Even so, in trying to register there the process got trapped in the CAPTCHA query failure loop . . . .

In terms of the preseed file error . . . it appears that it doesn't stop the installation or the use of Mint11, so it's just a minor annoyance and if one perseveres in spite of the adversity of error windows . . . the error goes away . . . .

One other question, on the other error the "missing firmware" error . . . does that also mean nothing or is it something that the installer picked up during the install?

e.e.p.

The MintPPC installer takes care of that. Nothing to worry about. It is just a warning at that point that it recognised your airport card. In Debian, they refrain from installing non-free stuff automatically. People have to do that themselves if they want to. I added it myself in the installation preseed file.

AAAAHHHHH fffffxxkn fiddlesticks!!!!! I went to that link and got the link for the actual .txt file, ran:

Code:
wget http://mac.linux.be/files/xorg/imac8.txt
sudo mv imac8.txt /etc/X11/xorg.conf

as root in a root terminal window which seemed to go fine, got no error or failure, rebooted, and got a black screen, rebooted again and got the yaboot login, choice for "l" for Linux and it attempted to boot but got back to the "kernel panic" script that I got before the second install . . . so I'm back to no Linux. What did I do wrong?? I tried to read through my past posts/replies that showed how to do the process correctly . . . I seem to remember that in 9 I did /etc/x11/xorg.conf and that was wrong, so I thought this time it should be the cap X11??? No???

Can't get back into Linux right now, do I have to erase and begin the install again? Was it wrong to use root terminal, logged in as root?? This is 800Mhz iLamp G4 . . . not 1Ghz if that makes any difference?

hhhhhhheeeeeeeellllllppppppp mmmmmeeeeeeeeeee says the little fly with the man's head trapped in the spiders web . . . (final scene from "the Fly" in B & W)

Guys???? Can somebody take a look at what I did and see what the error might be in the code?? Or can I get to the Terminal thru Yaboot login because that's as far as I can get before Mint crashes, which is new after trying to add the xorg.conf file?? Is there a way to salvage the install or is this toast?

I'd like to know for instance if the "x" in "X11" should be small or cap, if that makes a difference, so that if I have to run the install again I can try to run the command properly . . . . I'm out of Mint on my iMac and yesterday the iBook started to not respond to touchpad clicks . . . so I'm "Mint-less in SoCal" until I get this figured out, or, just start again. BTW, what is link to Debian Bug report site? Is it posted somewhere on this site?

eep: When you reboot, and end up at the yaboot prompt, type:
Code:
Linux 1

at some point you are asked to give the root password, do that
then
Code:
apt install xorg-xserver-video-nv

then
Code:
reboot

at the yaboot prompt, you type now:
Code:
Linux nouveau.modeset=0

and try to boot into a GUI.

Let me know how that goes...

Linux is case sensitive. Yes, the X in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is captial.
