It works, but "Select and Install software" fails.

larsm:

The G4 iLamp 800MHz is the same machine I've been having problems with getting 11 and with latest mini.iso had the exact kernel panic as you did. When I used JD's suggestion quoted above it got me passed the "select and install software" and did a complete installation . . . on reboot I get the Yaboot login, type "l" for Linux and get the command line loading . . . to a green grainy screen, I don't get the GDM login window, just what would be the background color of it. About 3.75 hours to install . . . didn't have time to try anything else, like "Linux 1" or whether I still need to install "xorg-video-nv" or doing the "imac8.txt" . . . or even if I can do any of that . . . . But, at least I got passed the kernel panic phase of the installation . . . hopefully I'll sleep well.

e.e.p.

by dropping into a shell from the expert install? or mounting via firewire target on a linux box?

I get the Kernel Panic every once in a while on my iMac G4 when I boot 11. I thought it was because it is the 4th partition in a quad boot set up but I guess it is not. I discovered that if you reboot it will work. Sometimes I have to reboot twice but it always boots in the end.

Also once you have X started it may be in 16 color. You will have to install the NV driver and get the proper xorg.conf as suggested before. You will also have to fix the home folder and the sound by adding things to /etc/modules.

Both those steps are described in the install fail thread.

If you are interested in joining me testing patches to MintPPC11 on the iMac G4 PM me.

I'm not sure if this quoted comment is in reference to my post here about kernel panic or to "larsm's" image of the kernel panic which looks like what happened with me exactly, or not, but in my previous thread where I was working with the December mini.iso, I also could reboot several times to get to a TTY terminal, now with the january it doesn't look so promising in the G4 iMac actually.

After I posted my results last night I tried the "Linux 1" option to try to get to a TTY "shell" and it ran some command line stuff and then the screen turned green for a minute and then it gradually turned black . . . with no white command line stuff visible . . . I had to shut the computer down with the power button . . . so that was twice trying to boot the new system and the 3rd?? try to install 11.

Any steps that I could do a few weeks ago are now questionable beyond anything from the Yaboot prompt at this point . . . . I'm not sure about what JD was saying in terms of getting the log out during the install?? I could boot from my iBook in firewire but after that I'd need more instructions. In terms of the "install fail" thread, there is also an "installation fails" thread as well as my "85% success" thread dealing with getting 11 going on the iMac. Testing patches would be OK, but right now can't get passed the green turning to black screen of death . . . on this 1/24/12 mini.iso installer to G4 iMac.
