Hi Again,
After installation Cds and DVDs wont play. When I insert a disc, the drive mounts ok a pop up window appears and I can choose VLC media player. But when I go to play the disc VLC gives me an error. so does every other player I have installed. I can eject the discs ok.

I do have sound...and it works ok. I checked in synaptic package manager and all the correct codecs are installed ok. To be sure I re installed them again and still I cant play form my cd/dvd drive.

I am running a powerpc G4.

Any ideas?

That is a problem which I can't solve. It's a problem the Debian developers need to address. I would file a bug report, but I am not sure whether it will get fixed now. You can try.

Well I guess it is for the trash heap (recycle) with this G4 then as not being able to use DVDs or Cds is a deal breaker. Weird...I have about 5 of them that I am working on for charity and each one is quirky in its own way even though on the surface they all appear to have the same specs...

anyway...thanks for your help...dunno if anyone else has come up with a workaround or not...

but thanks anyway ;)

Is libdvdcss installed ?

http://wiki.debian.org/MultimediaCodecs under DVD playback section.

I hate to sound like Mr. Obvious here, but did you choose Audio CD under Disk Selection? I'm listening to a music CD as I write this on my Power Mac G4. It's pretty ragged, but it works.

Oops... the CD doesn't want to eject until after I reboot. Oh, well.

Folks: Just posted on another thread on the issues with "kernel panic" in iMac G4, where I mentioned that in my Wheezy iMac install I also don't have CD/DVD drive capability either. The CD just "lies there" if you know what I mean--had to use command line to eject, etc. Not a major problem as I still have the OSX side going to do that . . . but it seems like fairly basic function that Debian should "take care of" in its pursuit of Linux "top dog" position??? Guess not.

e.e.p.
