why the incredibly long "erasing data" cycle on the install?

anybody have a clue? and anybody have a clue about what can be done to shorten it?

I have an 130GB disk and it took like 8 hours to install 11. Now I'm downgrading by installing 9.3 and it looks like its going to do it again!
