Anybody tried PowerPC Fedora 17?? https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publi ... /17/ppc64/

I thought it was just for 64bit, but I notice they still build a 32 bit version.

The other interesting thing I see in the release notes is the installed system uses grub2 not yaboot. I once (ages ago) had a quick go at setting that up and got nowhere. Has anybody done this?

Anyway, thought I'd share the info...

Do they have PPC releases for either the LXDE or XFCE spins?

Having a quick look I don't think so. They do have a net install image, so I'm speculating that you could probably use that to install a minimal setup and then add the desktop of your choice.

Yes, likely. I'm not very familiar with the Fedora world, but I'll try this when I return.

I gradded the Fedora 17 PPC netinstall iso and gave it a try. I ended up with the following:

I've not tried Fedora, but I've been messing with GRUB2. OMG is it time consuming with all the reboots that are necessary to get it working......

At the moment I've only got a basic menu going. I've also booted off an ubuntu live ISO using the loopback feature which is pretty cool (no more dd'ing to usb drives!).

Grub2 can boot off a msdos partition table so it is more flexible in that regard (I was investigating a better live persistent usb method). It still struggles with usb: you either have to hard code the port you are using, or I think possibly if you create new devaliases for the usb drives it will work. I think I know how to do the latter now so they are stored in nvram. Possibly that will make the usb drive available via the option key too?.....

Anyway, I'll update the PowerPC FAQ with any useful stuff I find (but yaboot is much much easier!).

I had actually gotten this issue fixed, but when I went back a few months later to actually redo the install my thread had been deleted.
