Anybody want to help me figure out an issue I'm having with a seldom-used computer?

My 2004 model PowerPC G5 tower had a working install of Debian 8 "Jessie" that I installed late last year. It worked smoothly for a while.

The computer is only used for light-duty work -- mostly looking at website design work on IceWeasel to determine if it works across generations of technology -- so it doesn't get switched on much.

Lately, when I try to turn it on, about 95% of the time it boots into what appears to be sleep mode. I don't get the boot-up screen with all the text telling me what's loading. I just get a black screen and my monitor light pulses like it would when I put it to "sleep" back when it still had Mac OSX on it.

Nothing wakes the computer. CTRL-ALT-F1 doesn't bring me to a command line, and CTRL-ALT-DELETE doesn't reset after pressing CTRL-ALT-F1, either.

I tried to get it to boot from the installer CD, thinking I could get into Rescue Mode or whatever...but no dice. Still a pulsing light on the monitor and the tower as if it's asleep. I even held the C key as I started the machine. Same result.

My last-ditch effort was to unplug the tower for a while. That didn't work, either.

Anybody know how to be Prince Charming and break this curse of endless sleep that's afflicting my G5?

There is the rare instance where it will proceed to boot up, but then it usually hangs before I get to the login screen. My only option in all of the above cases is to do a hard shutdown using the power button on the tower.

Hi,
that sounds like a defect graphic card. Did you try to install another linux (maybe mint wheezy)? With Jessie I always had problems, but Lubuntu and Mint-Katya works very well. I suggest to install some other dist first to see, if the problem still appears. Good luck!
