Continuing saga from Linux On Your Apple page:

Okay, I think I finally landed in the New World, only had a few bumps after the initial green log-in screen. At first just had a black screen with a pop-up window stating:

GTK+ icon theme is not properly set. Run XSettings Manager.

Not knowing what that is I punched okay and a nice blue Lightweight Desktop Environment screen. I explored the cool bottom toolbar and found Update Manager won't go and File Updater won't go. I did receive a pop-up in Software Sources stating: "You have 1 broken package on your system" and to use some kind of filter to find it (and then what? I'm not a techie!). Also what are "Qt 4 Settings" in the toolbar?

All in all things look nice and I'm still exploring, but it's a REAL hassle being unable to write on your Mac partitions or even flash drives (never mind wireless!) if you want to cut-and-paste any new long commands into the terminal if I have to. I'd even settle for viewing Linux folders on my Mac desktop just to be able to communicate a little with each half.

So, I'm still exploring and stumbling but just thought you'd like to know I think I finally got here!

Your desktop should look green. Follow the instructions for setting the background image. Also follow the instructions for setting the openbox preferences right. What worries me more is that you have a broken package. Can you tell me which package that is ? After that we will have a look at the rest. You might want to set the Appearance to Shiki-Wise-LXDE.

I hope you have all the Mint programs now.

Well, I followed luvgirl12345's re-installing suggestion starting with "./mint-installer" and things haven't changed much. The sign-in screen is still green but after you do the password thing it turns black. Hit File Manager and you get the "GTK+ icon theme isn't property set, XSettings Manager isn't running" then the blue Lightweight screen. The broken package pop-up alert hasn't appeared but maybe because I just didn't hit the right items this time. It never did mention exactly what "package" it was. Disturbing is no Update Manager and no Upload Manager. In the Prefs toolbar, icons are missing for Bluetooth, Monitor Settings, Open JDK, Q+ 4. In Systems toolbar icons are missing for Disk Utility, GKrelly, HPLJ, and Internet icons missig are FileZilla, GFTP, Wicd.

I don't want to merely adjust for pretty screens if something important's broken underneath. Is there some kind of program which can test each file to see whether they're broken or linked together right? Shame to get this far and essential stuff doesn't work.

You can see it with Synaptic Package Manager. Just filter the broken packages....

I am sure that your system is not complete...We have to first eliminate the broken package and then you have to run the installer again.

Things are really bad now. After rebooting to see if that'd do anything (before getting your Synaptic Package suggestion), I'm back to the black screen only now there are only empty icons on the bottom toolbar except for the mint leaf first one, and the only menus coming from it is Login in Window in Preferences and New Login in System Tools. Logging out and logging back in doesn't help. I guess it's all screwed.

Dear Jim. I would start all over. Make sure that you install all the programs in the installer. At one point in the installer it asks you to install the Mint specific programs. If that is all done, you can safely reboot.

I don't know what happened, but it's difficult to help you like this. It's better to have a fresh start. It's worth it!

Okay, I'm back to my original state after asking the local geek what I could do without hitting the Debian installer CD for hours and hours and he told me to go into Sessions in the green log-in screen and hit "Failsafe terminal" and type your mint installer sequence there, and once I got back I hit the Synaptic Manager which filtered out that "xserver-xorg-core" librecode0 was broken and erased it, then I did another mint-install to replace the broken file, but though we're back up, still the same problems as before, like black to Lightweight screen and no Update Manager, etc. Does that mean doing the whole Debian CD install all over again or can it be done thru mint installs?

You told me you have more than one Mac you would like to try it on. I would simply try it again on another Mac, from scratch. I have tried it a dozen times and also other people reported that it went without problems.

I restalled Debian but hit a stumbling block with MintPPC installation. In the "nano" command this text editor(?) comes down, and guessing my way in using it, I moved the cursor to write my name under the root command like:

root ALL=(ALL) ALL
jimwg ALL=(ALL) ALL

Then I CTRL-x and Y saved.

On my screen is:

jimwg@icebook:~$ sudo ./mint-installer

When I input this it just prints a new command line.

When I went in under su root:

root@icebook:/home/jimwg# ./mint-installer

it types:

bash: ./mint-installer: /bin/sh^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

I'm not using the the other machines because home school students are using them on rotating basis, so if I can make it work on this guinea pig it'll go for them.
