Folks/JD:

Ran a search with the above terms and got "no results found" so I'm posting the question. Spent yesterday exclusively in MintPP and between checking emails in Yahoo Mail and in trying to play a video in Youtube via IW6 I get "additional plugins required" error bars. When I click on the "install plugins" button I get "have to do manually" and when I click on that I see options for Adobe Reader and Flash Player 10+. In the Flash Player download window there are 3 drop down options for Linux--something with YUM, something with .tar.gz??, and another one. The wireless connection was bad at work so I didn't want to mess with it, so the question . . . if I want to download Adobe Reader/Flash Player to MintPPC can I do that through the Adobe site? If so, which file type would I want? Or, do I need to go to Synaptic Package Manager and see what is available there as far as Adobe stuff goes?? Many thanks.

e.e.p.

There is no decent flash player for PowerPC linux. You can set youtube to HTML5 and see it that way, or use minitube.

OK, thanks for the reply. I was just this minute reading the "low end mac" thread in "Offtopic" and someone there mentioned "Flashvideoreplacer" . . . as obviously a "replacer" for Flash? But, no, it really isn't? But getting back to your HTML5 or minitube . . . "the devil is in the details" to coin a phrase . . . . Where would I select the HTML5 option?? I'm not up on the latest web formats, I'm assuming that Flash is HTML6??? or more?? . . . but somewhere in Ice Weasel there is a place to pick HTML5? when I want to look at Youtube?? I'm away from my MintPPC unit for awhile so I can't look. And, "minitube" is an application that can be added through "Synaptic"????

JD:

Thanks very much for those details, so looks like Youtube html5 is a separate web site.

What about Adobe Reader? In OSX I have mostly used Adobe Reader to open PDFs; in the versions prior to 10.6 Adobe Reader was much better than Preview IMHO, now maybe not so much difference. Reading a PDF last night in Mint with the stock reader some of the fonts were not so smoothly rendered . . . it's OK, but is Adobe Reader do-able or is there a way to get the fonts more better? : - ))

HTML is the language/code of webpages.

HTML 4 or HTML 5 are just versions, like Mac OS 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 etc.

HTML 5 is the newest and allows video to be played directly without the need for a plug-in(which actually IS NOT part of the browser, in this case iceweasel) such as flash or quicktime.

http://www.youtube.com/html5 is just a site that you can use to have it set a cookie to show you videos available in HTML 5 where available as opposed to all of them in flash. Only about half or less are available in HTML 5 on youtube, but it is better than none.

OK, got it. I knew HTML is the language, didn't know what number was current or ahead of the curve, thanks for the thorough explication. I'm back on the MintPPC channel, so I'll try to explore a bit more.

I have cydia and rock but neither seem to have it...

Not to be rude, but seeing as how it isn't related to MintPPC, the above post is kind of off-topic, wouldn't you say?
