Risto: There are issues with iBooks G3's getting altivec code. iMac G3's may also be affected. I know Powerbook G3s are not affected.

Another solution is to use minitube and skip all the flas stuff. It is a standalone YouTube browser works great.

quite impossible, every non-altivec machine must have the same issue.
Btw, i'd really like to see the same TenFourFox features on LinuxPPC too.

No

It is an issue with the machine's ID and Linux. Sometimes it gives Altivec to Systems that have a G3. It only affects these models, and since it is currently happening, it is quite possible.

if you're right, this is really a serious Linux kernel bug. Why don't you advice linuxppc-dev ???

or you can try this:

http://www.youtube.com/html5
go here and enable the HTML trial. Then from now on when you open a vid in you tube it uses HTML5 by default and not flash. You can watch your vids in your browser this way...

works ok for me...

and yes I use Minitube too and its very good...all the vids all the time :D

Flashvideoreplacer still works pretty darn good in Iceweasel. Opens in standalone gnome Mplayer, plays well. Fans come on and stay on, but that's a whole 'nother story. For me, Minitube works ok, but sometimes it doesn't play videos, sometimes it crashes my ibook. I tend to avoid it now.

I've been using Midori a lot recently. Its just so damn fast, it makes me jump around my living room in uncontrollable fits of joy. But no extensions in Midori and HTML 5 video sucks on 1.07 ghz of G4'ness, so I looked around for other options. I've used the greasemonkey script viewtube on mac os x, but of course Midori doesn't have greasemonkey or greasekit....but, it does have some script functionality. If you enable user addons 0.1 under extensions in preferences you can head over to userscripts.org and download some scripts. A window will open on when you are on a page with a script to install and ask you if you want to install it. Some work, some don't. Viewtube works in midori. For the most part.

For the uninitiated viewtube replaces flash with a standard player or webm, whichever you prefer. I ended up having to install another script to block webm as to stop videos playing automatically on youtube. There are different settings at the top of the player window, you can play around with them, but the settings low def mp4 or flv, MPEG and Any (lets viewtube pick the player it wants to use) work best for me. It uses the totem player plugin, and it works, though some videos make the player lock up and stop playing. It takes a restart to fix it. If I were more of a Linux God maybe I could find a fix but so far I can't. There is also a + setting, that launches a "fake" fullscreen option. Similar to HTML 5 playback in Chrome. Attached is a screen shot.

There you have it, another nail in Flash's coffin. Also, I like Google street view, but it requires Flash to work in a browser. Boo hoo. But you can use this site:

http://www.viewstreetnoflash.com

and have at it. The other day in Midori I cruised all around Timoleauge, Ireland, where my great grandmother was born in 1861. Good times.

I had quite the heck of a time getting youtube working.

Gnash, wouldn't do anything.
Flashvideoreplacer looks like its been removed from the addons (correct me if I'm wrong).
Youtube with no flash auto for greasemonkey didn't work
viewtube worked sometimes... but only on lowest quality setting
html5 worked but very slow
minitube, couldn't figure out how to get it?
mplayer and vlc streaming wasn't working

I now use video downloadhelper addon for iceweasel, there is an option right below youtube window to 'copy url', I paste this into either a new window or vlc player and it works wonderful every time. I little inconvinient, but meh. It also works with many other video sites.
