Gents:

The continuing saga . . . ran "apt-get dist-upgrade" and all appeared to go well, part way through there was a window taling about something being upgraded and the "daemon" would no longer recognize the old daemon" or something like that, but it said, "don't worry, you just have to restart X to get it back . . ." Restarted and we loaded a tty shell log in; shut the unit down, restarted back to same thing. Any thoughts on how to get the GUI back ??? so far the iBook has been trouble free in MintPPC . . . while the iMac continues to be nothing but trouble . . . . Many thanks.

got the same problem, the solution is to reinstall gdm and mintppc-gdm-themes
login as root:

su

root password
then

apt install gdm

type "N" when asked if you want to keep your gdm settings

apt install mintppc-gdm-themes
/etc/init.d/gdm start

many thanks for that, I'll run it in a bit . . . finally figured out how to get a GUI into the iMac using the iBook, but I need the GUI in the iBook to do that . . . so, we'll see if I can get the ethernet working and maybe clean up the iMac installation, not holding my breath, but there has been some movement, and I got to the syslog, desmg, and X.0.org. logs . . . but then lost them with the upgrade today.

@JD & theos911: Thanks to both of you for your posts, I'm back in the GUI . . . many thanks. I didn't get to try the "startx" option, but the "apt install gdm" got it done.
