Can't get thinkfan to run. Will keep trying.

@ocmac: So it was retrievable thru aptitude or synaptic? It seems like if it's downloadable thru those apps it should be use-able by the Wheezy system??? Haven't had time to get to the iBook since I saw that thread, so I was hoping that JD would have some insights into the thinkfan concept . . . like whether it is able to work in MintPPC or not, etc . . . .

e.e.p.

I got it through synaptic. It installs, says it installs, I can find all the files but it doesn't put anything in the menu, nor does it put a desktop file in usr/share/applications, and even finding the executable and making sure it was executable didn't work, nor did trying to launch it in a terminal. I think it might not be ppc compatible.

Any help from more Linux savvy peeps would be appreciated.

@ojordan: Thanks for that link . . . I checked it out, and I'll have to run some of those commands on the iBook to see what shows up. But, it would be more clear if we could know what the recommended temperature should be so that we could check the settings, etc. The issue arises from the comparison to OSX where doing the same tasks does not start the fan at all, whereas in MintPPC the fan is quite noisy . . . is having the fan going for minor tasks better for the computer?? it might be, or it might be unnecessary, but in either case it is loud.

e.e.p.

@et al, ocmac:

Yes, I also installed Thinkfan using synaptic today . . . and also could not get it to run or show up in a menu anywhere . . . . Fan blowing at the drop of a hat as usual.

e.e.p.

Ah . . . there was a note in Synaptic saying something about how thinkfan was adjusted in "hwslog????" so cool . . . . So, can we just type "thinkfan" in a shell window?

e.e.p.

@theos: Thanks . . . very helpful . . . I'll give that a try the next time I get back to the iBook.

Forum:

I ran
Code:
sudo thinkfan
. . . just typing
Code:
thinkfan
did not do anything and I got this

Quote:
WARNING: Using default temperature inputs in /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal.
WARNING: You have not provided any correction values for any sensor, and your fan will only start at 55 °C. This can be dangerous for your hard drive.
Config as read from /etc/thinkfan.conf:
Fan level Low High
0 0 55
1 48 60
2 50 61
3 52 63
4 56 65
5 59 66
7 63 32767
/proc/acpi/ibm/fan: No such file or directory
Error opening /proc/acpi/ibm/fan. Is this a computer really Thinkpad? Is the thinkpad_acpi module loaded? Are you running thinkfan with root privileges?

Back here in the iBook we've got the fan blowing at moderately high noise levels so the fan is working where in OSX it would not . . . but still don't know if thinkfan is doing anything or whether the temps could be adjusted in thinkfan . . . or whether thinkfan just works for ibm products . . . since thinkfan says it is adjusting the temps in a file that it then says is not found?

I'm posting this here so perhaps "ocmac" will see what I've got going and maybe we can get some insight to help figure it out . . . .

e.e.p.
